Lawrence University is a deliberately small, residential college of liberal arts and sciences and a nationally recognized conservatory of music, both devoted exclusively to undergraduate education. Founded in 1847, Lawrence is a community of 1,500 intellectually curious students that bring a diversity of experience and thought from nearly every state and 50 countries outside the U.S. The energy and passion for learning is palpable from the classroom to the dorm room and throughout the campus. Lawrence is devoted to Individualized Learning, our most unique and defining attribute. Individualized Learning is an academic commitment characterized by professor/mentors whose foremost motivation is teaching and a rigorous curriculum designed to create the opportunity for every student to be educated as unique individuals. That's why nearly two-thirds of all courses have the optimal student-teacher ratio of 1 to 1. Moreover, Lawrence is among only 19 colleges in the United States with overall student-faculty ratios less that 9:1. Individualized Learning helps transform our students into critical thinkers, articulate writers and collaborative problem-solvers that are prepared for success in a rapidly changing world.
