When the University of Southern California opened in 1880, Los Angeles still lacked paved streets and electric lights. Today, our city is a global center for the arts, technology and intercontinental trade, and USC is a world-renowned private research institution enrolling more international students than any other U.S. university and operating an integrated academic medical center that serves more than a million patients each year.
In 1880, USC formally opened their doors with 53 students, a college of liberal arts, a university band, and a debate team. In 1884, they held their first commencement with three students. In 1885, USC’s college of medicine, which was the first one in Southern California, opened. In 1888 they played their first football game, in 1892, the first school newspaper, the University Rostrum appeared, and in 1896, the law school began.
In 1909, USC’s Department of Education opened, and during WWII, USC was one of the 131 colleges and universities nationally that took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, which offered students a path to a Navy commission. In 1952, the Health Sciences campus was opened, in 1968, they launched the “Urban Semester” program, and in 1984, the University Park campus was the site of the 84’ Los Angeles Olympics.
